Street Outreach: Meeting People Where They Are

Safe Space’s Street Outreach Team connects with unhoused individuals across Chico—meeting people in camps, parks, and public spaces. Through a consistent, compassionate presence, our team builds trust and offers essential supplies, shelter referrals, and a connection to long-term support.

Street outreach is a vital link for those who may face barriers to accessing help—whether due to trauma, mental health challenges, or past experiences of being turned away. By meeting people on their terms, we provide low-barrier support and open the door to stability and care.

Sandwiches with Love

One shining example of this effort is the weekly sandwich runs led by board member Nancy Wirtz and her dedicated team of volunteers. Every week—rain or shine, even in extreme heat—they deliver over 100 fresh, high-quality sandwiches, along with cold water and heartfelt compassion, to our unhoused neighbors throughout Chico. These visits do more than feed people—they build relationships, foster dignity, and remind people they are not forgotten.

For many, it all begins with a simple act of care—and someone willing to show up.
