Food Donations Guidelines
To ensure donations are safe and easy to use, please refrain from donating expired food we cannot distribute items past their expiration date. We also request that donated food be non-perishable, ready-to-eat, and easily openable. Items that require cooking or special preparation are not ideal for our program. Your thoughtful donations help us provide safe, convenient, and nutritious options for everyone in need.
Clothing Donations Guidelines
We kindly ask that all clothing donations be clean and in good condition, with no heavily tattered or ripped items. Shoes should be either gently used or new, without holes. Socks and accessories should also be clean and wearable. Please note that used underwear cannot be accepted; only new items are allowed. In addition, we are unable to accept housewares or large Queen- or King-size comforters, as we do not have the space or need for them. For those types of donations, we highly recommend our friends at CHAT, who can make great use of them.
Your Support Makes a Difference!
Since 2013, Safe Space has embodied justice, compassion, and community care—made possible by supporters like you. What began as a small group of neighbors opening the doors of the Chico Peace and Justice Center on a cold winter night has grown into a powerful, community-driven nonprofit that is now setting the standard for effective, low-barrier sheltering in Chico.
Your generosity has been the heartbeat of this growth. Because of you, we’ve not only expanded our capacity, but we’ve refined a model of shelter that builds trust, dignity, and hope—bridging the gap between our unhoused and housed neighbors. Each meal served, each warm bed offered, and each hand extended in care is rooted in the support you’ve given. Together—our guests, staff, volunteers, and supporters—you create a true Safe Space of love, justice, and belonging.
Now, we are ready to take the next bold step: transforming Safe Space from a seasonal, temporary shelter into a year-round, 24/7 permanent low-barrier shelter with supportive services. This vision means more than just a roof—it means immediate access to safe beds every night, wraparound services that meet people where they are, and the stability needed to help each guest overcome barriers and move toward permanent housing.
This is where you come in. Your continued support isn’t just appreciated—it is essential. Every gift brings us closer to a permanent home for Safe Space, where no neighbor is left out in the cold. Together, we can move from survival to true community transformation.
With your generosity, we can make sure all of our neighbors not only survive! But thrive.
